Nerida Hansen Fabrics: Less Bad and More Good

As the director of Nerida Hansen Fabrics, it is my long-term mission to source and supply the most eco-friendly fabrics on the planet. Our offering of organic and sustainable fabrics is constantly growing and we recommend you check back in regularly to see what has been added.

It is well known that synthetic fibres like nylon, polyester and acrylic are usually made from petrochemicals and can take up to 500 years to break down - you will not find these fabrics at Nerida Hansen.

Whilst I am already using an earth-friendly selection of fabrics, I know I can do better, which is why my Mantra of “Less Bad and More Good” will never expire.

I curate designs and source fabrics with longevity in mind, as I want garments and products that are sewn from my fabrics to last season to season. Myself, my staff and hundreds of my customers are testament to the fact that my fabrics have been tried and tested, over and over again and the results are top-notch.

Help Sustain your garments for long-term use

You can help your fabric and garments last too, by caring for them and washing them minimally. I need to declare up to 5% shrinkage for most of the fabrics because most are natural fibres and will have a tendancy to shrink. Because of this I am compelled to recommend that you pre-wash your textiles prior to cutting and sewing. (But to be honest, I am too lazy to pre-wash and never have a problem!) Even our Oeko-tex inks are completely safe to be worn straight away against the body. It is also important to note that all the fabric descriptions come with care instructions but are a guide only.

Our Standards
All cottons currently used are Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) certified cotton. Our range of GOTS certified organic cotton means that organic standards are ensured from the harvesting of raw materials through to environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing. Our linens are all grown sustainably and our cellulosic fibres are all Lenzing™, which is the most environmentally friendly brand of Tencel fibres in the world.

Fabric Print Colour and Vibrancy

Fabric Print Colour and Vibrancy: Please note that whilst we endeavour to show the fabric online in its truest form, the fabric colours and vibrancy may vary from the digital image presented here. Please also consider the nature of the fabric you have selected and how this pattern will respond.

General Rules of Thumb when purchasing from our online store:

Mid-Weight Cotton generally holds its vibrancy, but due to the flat weave we recommend you expect a slight dullness compared to what you see on screen.

Cotton Sateen holds its vibrancy very well and with a slight sheen on the front side will usually appear as bright as we present online.

Linen and Cotton Linen are very open weaves and therefore colours are never as vibrant as they may appear on screen. They are always beautiful but very organic in nature so you should expect up to 20-30% drop in vibrancy in most cases.

Tencel Linen holds colour but the nature of the slub means that the colours can sometimes appear to be quite flat, especially darker colours.

GOTS ORGANIC MID-WEIGHT COTTON

The vibrancy of our prints on the Organic Mid-weight is high.

TENCEL LINEN

Our TENCEL™ linen has a silky, soft feel, that is more luxurious than any other linen.

It is incredibly breathable, and versatile with a standalone drape, making it an ideal choice for skirts, dresses, tops and sleepwear. TENCEL™ is a cellulose fibre that is made from wood pulp (comes from sustainably grown forests), and because it is derived from a plant it is biodegradable. It is 50 per cent more absorbent than cotton and due to being breathable, it is less susceptible to odorous bacteria. The production process of this fabric has passed OEKO-TEX® certification.
